5 Reasons Implant Dentures Are Better

If you have lost one or more teeth or are facing the loss of teeth, you might be looking at your replacement options. Although traditional dentures can serve the purpose, they are an older option that doesn’t take full advantage of advances in dentistry.

If you are looking for the best tooth replacement option, dental implants and implant dentures are a better choice. Here’s why.

1. Stay in Place

Dental implants mean that your replacement teeth will always be in place.

Single-tooth dental implants are generally fully fixed in place–they won’t come out. Implant dentures can be made to be fully fixed or removable. But even removable dentures stay in place when they’re supposed to. They won’t come out when you’re talking, laughing, or eating.

This helps them function better. You can speak more clearly and eat with confidence thanks to replacement teeth that are firmly in place. Plus, you never have to worry about smiling. Unlike removable dentures that are sometimes randomly out of place, implant dentures will always stay where they are supposed to be.

2. Easier to Care for

Traditional dentures are a nuisance to care for. In addition to removing them at night for soaking, you have to take extra steps to clean them after every meal–they tend to get food stuck to them or under them, and that means cleaning them each time you eat.

Implant dentures, on the other hand, just need to be cared for like natural teeth. Brush, floss, and see the dentist for regular checkups. If your implant dentures are removable, you should take them out daily for a full cleaning, but otherwise, you treat them just like natural teeth. There’s no major difference in terms of care.

3. Support Themselves

Dental implants, like natural teeth, can support themselves. They’re anchored in your bone, which means they don’t rely on your natural teeth and gums for support.

Traditional dentures do have to get support from another source. For full dentures, this means putting the force of chewing on your gums, which were never meant to support your teeth. This is a major source of denture pain.

For partial dentures, support comes from both your gums and your natural teeth. This not only leads to discomfort as with full dentures, it can also make it harder to keep your natural teeth clean. The combination of food accumulation and wear on your teeth can lead to early loss of teeth supporting traditional dentures.

4. Stimulate Your Bone

Our bones and teeth work together. The bones support the teeth and the teeth in turn stimulate the bone so the body maintains it.

When you lose your natural teeth, your body can begin removing bone from the jaw, which can change the shape of your face, making you look older. Traditional dentures don’t stimulate the bone at all. If anything, they can speed the loss of bone from your jaw.

Dental implants are secured in the bone like natural teeth, and like natural teeth they stimulate your bone. This helps you maintain your youthful appearance longer.

5. Can Last a Lifetime

When properly taken care of, dental implants can last a lifetime. This is not like other products that have a “Lifetime Warranty” that might only last a few years. This means that with proper care, dental implants can last you the rest of your life.

Studies up to 30 years show no reason to believe that dental implants have a particular point at which they start to fail. Most people who got implants that long ago pass away with their implants in place and functional. Some people have had dental implants for more than 50 years, and since modern dental implants were invented just over 50 years ago, that’s as close to permanent as we can get.

Now, the restorations might be a little different. Dental crowns on implants, like those on natural teeth, might last 10-20 years before they need to be replaced. Studies of implant dentures up to 30 years long show that the implant dentures might last a lifetime, too, though they might need repair or adjustment about once every decade or so.
