Bonding vs. Veneers: Which Is Right For You?

Many people have cosmetic issues with their teeth that make them self-conscious or embarrassed when opening their mouth. When researching ways to correct cosmetic dental concerns, two very common results are dental bonding and porcelain veneers. Each of these can be very effective, but you should know the differences between the two and who is a good candidate for each.

Pros and Cons of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a popular option among people who have multiple cosmetic issues, who are okay with investing a little more time and money into a durable, beautiful smile. The benefits of porcelain veneers are that they:

  • Last for an average of 10 years
  • Are stain-resistant
  • Can be completely customized to match your natural teeth
  • Can cover up even significant cosmetic issues with teeth

However, porcelain veneers do require a longer process and multiple visits. Your teeth must be prepared by removing a small amount of enamel, so that the veneers will fit comfortably. After the enamel is removed, impressions are taken of the teeth in order to obtain the most precisely fitted custom veneers. Until those custom veneers arrive, though, you will need to wear temporary veneers.

Pros and Cons of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is best suited for people who have only minor cosmetic issues, who want a quick fix rather than an involved process. Bonding involves using a tooth colored resin to cover problems such as small chips and cracks or gaps between teeth. Benefits of dental bonding include:

  • It is performed in a single office visit
  • It is often less expensive than porcelain veneers
  • It can be a better option for people with minor cosmetic problems
  • It is long lasting with proper care

Dental bonding does not require any removal of your natural tooth enamel, and it is a fairly quick process that does not require extensive preparation. Bonding will not generally last as long as veneers, but it can last for years as long as you take good care of your teeth.
